Tour One - Paleokastritsa and Corfu Town (4 hours, 6 hours or 8 hours)

Departing from Corfu's port we drive to Paleokastritsa (below), the west coast's most picturesque resort. Paleokastritsa consists of two large peninsulas and five coves surrounded by wooded hills. With its green, mountain backdrop it is an exceptionally beautiful spot. Perched on the rocky northern promontory is the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was founded in 1225. The building which exists today was built later and houses a museum with Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons. Its picturesque bell tower must be one of the most photographed sights in Corfu.

The tour will continue with a visit to Corfu Town (below) with its unique architecture influenced by Venetian, French and British occupation. The most notable examples are the Old and New Fortresses (Venetian) as well as the Palace of Saint Michael & Saint George (British) which now houses an impressive Museum of Asiatic Art. The Liston is Corfu Town's most traditional meeting place, where people gather to read newspapers and drink coffee or ouzo at the old-established cafes. Its terrace, with a series of arches fronting the road, was designed by the French in the early 19th century and is based on the Rue de Rivoli in Paris. It forms the western side of the Esplanade, which is the largest square in southern Europe. Here you can watch cricket matches on summer afternoons while sipping ginger beer, as well as parades by philharmonic bands and religious processions. There are many other places to visit in Corfu Town including the archaeological site of Palaiopolis, which was the ancient city of Corfu, and the nearby Palace of Mon Repos - birthplace of the Duke of Edinburgh. Alternatively, you may choose to wander round the maze of narrow streets in the Old Town with small shops selling traditional products, or maybe visit the church of Saint Spyridon, the Patron Saint of the island. Your excursion will end back at the port.

Tour Two - Achilleon, Kanoni and Corfu Town (4 hours, 6 hours or 8 hours)

Departing from Corfu's port we drive to the hilltop village of Gastouri and Achilleon Palace which was built between the years 1890 and 1892 by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria (known as Sissy) on land bought during a visit to Corfu. This large building, in neoclassical style, has three floors adorned with many statues and paintings. The vast gardens surrounding the building, with a wonderful view of a large part of the island, run down to the coast road. They are decorated with many statues, the most famous of which are the two bronze runners, the dying Achilles (below) and the statue of Achilles Triumphant. After the assassination of Empress Elizabeth in 1898 in Geneva, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany purchased the palace in 1907 and used it as a place for relaxation. All of the rooms contain personal items of the former owners and their original furniture.

We continue to Kanoni, from where you can enjoy the excellent views of Vlacherna Convent (below) which is linked to the mainland by a causeway, and the picturesque Mouse Island. According to legend Mouse Island was formed when the ship that had taken Odysseus back to Ithaki, his home port, was turned to stone by Poseidon, god of the sea, angry at being defied by the Phaeceans.

We then return to Corfu Town (below) with its historical attractions and tempting shopping opportunities. (Details above.) Your excursion will end back at the port.

We also offer a full range of other travel services including accommodation, ticketing and car or bike rental. Details on our website.
